How to obtain a residence permit in France for refugees and persons under subsidiary protection

Obtaining a residence permit in France is an important step for refugees and persons under subsidiary protection, opening up access to a range of rights and opportunities, including the ability to work, receive social assistance and integrate into society.

The main stages of obtaining a residence permit:

1. Submitting an application and receiving a temporary receipt

Once your refugee status has been recognised or you have been granted subsidiary protection, the first step is to go to the prefecture where you live. Here you will be given a temporary receipt (récépissé) which allows you to stay legally in France and begin the process of obtaining a residence permit.

2. Signing of the Republican Integration Treaty (CIR)

One of the key stages is signing the Republican Integration Treaty (CIR). This treaty obliges you to take French language and civic education courses, which helps you integrate into society faster. Additional courses may be assigned based on your level of French.

3. Obtaining a residence permit

Depending on your status, you may be issued a temporary residence permit for 4 years (for persons under subsidiary protection) or a resident card for 10 years (for refugees). It is important to carefully monitor the accuracy of all data in the documents and, if necessary, contact the prefecture to correct them.

4. Extension and renewal of documents

Once your temporary residence permit expires, you must apply for an extension. To do this, you must submit an application 2 months before the current period expires. Renewal and renewal of documents will allow you to maintain access to social rights and opportunities in France.

Please remember to check your email regularly and stay in touch with your local authorities to ensure timely response to any requests or changes.
