How to get social housing for refugees?

Obtaining social housing in France is one of the important steps for refugees seeking to settle in the country. Social housing (HLM) is designed for people with low incomes and provides affordable rental options.

Steps to getting social housing

1. Registration of a request for social housing

Once you have received your temporary residence permit or the receipt for your application, it is important to register on the Demande de logement social platform. This is the official website where you can submit your request for social housing. Registering on this platform gives you a unique departmental number that will be used to record your application.

2. Collection of necessary documents

To apply for social housing you will need:

- Residence permit or a receipt for submitting documents for its receipt.

- A decision by OFPRA or CNDA to grant you refugee status or subsidiary protection.

- Documents confirming your income (benefits, salary, income certificate).

- Other documents confirming your right to social housing (for example, certificates of family composition).

3. Contacting associations and local authorities

In parallel with applying for social housing, contact local associations and authorities such as prefectures, town halls and departments. These organisations can help you get on a priority list for housing, which will speed up the process.

4. Application review and housing acquisition

Applications for social housing are reviewed by special commissions. If you are offered housing, you will have 10 days to accept or decline the offer. It is important not to decline without serious reasons, as this can significantly delay the process of obtaining housing.

Why is it important to get social housing?

Social housing provides affordable rental options that allow refugees and low-income people to have a stable place to live. This allows them to focus on integrating into society, learning the language and finding a job.
